Toyota introduces GVM upgrade for HiLux

Purchasers of a new Toyota HiLux who need more payload capacity can now order a GVM upgrade for their vehicle. Introduced in August, and applicable to select HiLux model grades only, the upgrade option adds $4,000+ to the HiLux’s purchase price.

Developed in Australia, the factory-fitted Toyota GVM upgrade increases the vehicle payload by 372-435kg (depending on grade), allowing for a maximum payload of up to 1525kg (approx.).

Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations, John Pappas, said the availability of a GVM upgrade option would further boost the capability of the HiLux while offering customers Toyota-backed peace of mind.

“Introducing a GVM upgrade option for the new HiLux will allow customers to maximise the vehicle’s already-excellent load-carrying capabilities, providing benefits to both fleet and private buyers,” Pappas said.

“Being Toyota’s very own factory-fitted option, it ensures the HiLux retains its Toyota five-year warranty and is compatible with all safety systems, giving it a real advantage over its aftermarket competition.”

Along with the boost in payload, the GVM upgrade increases vehicle ride height by up to 10mm, due to the fitment of longer monotube shock absorbers on the rear. Axle capacities are increased by 100kg at the front and 280kg at the rear.

The GVM upgrade is available on five work-focussed HiLux 4X4 dual-cab model grades – WorkMate cab-chassis, WorkMate pickup, SR Extra cab-chassis, SR cab-chassis, SR pickup and SR5 pickup.

The only drivetrain available with the GVM upgrade is Toyota’s 2.8-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder producing 150kW/500Nm, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and dual-range part-time four-wheel drive. SR and SR5 dual-cab variants also add 48-volt V-Active technology – Toyota’s mild hybrid system. Also available on the Prado, V-Active replaces the standard alternator with a motor-generator and 48-volt battery. Along with a 12kW increase in engine power, reduced CO2 emissions and a claimed improvement in fuel efficiency of up to 10 per cent, this technology reduces NVH levels and provides smoother and quieter driving in stop-start conditions.
