5th Wheel Hitch option coming for Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD
The Chevrolet Silverado, Australia’s best-selling full-size truck in 2025, will soon be available with a 5th wheel hitch option for those that need maximum towing capability. To be available on the Silverado 2500 HD, the 5th wheel hitch increases towing capacity from 4,500kg to 8,000kg. General Motors Specialty Vehicles (GMSV) say the option will be available on the locally re-manufactured Silverado 2500 HD from Q3, 2026.
The hitch comes with a choice of two factory towing solutions – 50mm Pin Coupling or 3.0-inch Gooseball – to suit different trailer types. Both incorporate a factory air brake system that has been specifically designed, tested and installed as an integrated package on the Silverado 2500 HD, ensuring added confidence and capability when the job demands more from the vehicle.
The package also includes hardware and functional vehicle upgrades designed to make towing easier and more practical. These include a chassis structure and bed attachment plate, added trailer connectors at the front of the dual cab truck’s tub, and trailer brake airlines. For the driver, additional interior controls and warning lights are also fitted.
Fitment of the 5th wheel hitch will be completed locally by GMSV as part of the right-hand drive re-manufacturing process for the Silverado, ensuring the solution is delivered as part of the complete vehicle, rather than as a separate, aftermarket-style add-on.
It should be noted that fitting the 5th wheel hitch will elevate the Silverado 2500 HD into NB2 classification (GVM of between 4,500kg and 12,000kg) under Australian Design Rules. This in turn means specific licensing requirements. NB2 vehicles cannot be driven on a regular car licence, requiring a Light Rigid licence or similar (depending on the state or territory) to be legally driven on Australian roads.
“Silverado 2500 HD customers often have serious towing requirements, and they want a solution that gives them greater confidence, capability and flexibility,” said Jess Bala, who recently resigned her position as Managing Director, GM Australia and New Zealand. “The new Genuine 5th Wheel Hitch option expands what the Silverado 2500 can already do for those customers, while preserving the premium refinement and heavy-duty performance they expect from the vehicle.
“The choice of 50mm Pin Coupling or 3-inch Gooseball means customers can select the setup that best matches the trailers they tow, while the factory-integrated air brake system adds another layer of confidence for larger combinations. It is a practical, purpose-built solution that makes the Silverado 2500 HD even more capable for customers with specialised towing needs.”
The GMSV genuine 5th wheel hitch option adds $18,000 to the list price of a Silverado 2500 HD for the 3-inch Gooseball, and $20,000 to the list price for the 50mm Pin Coupling. Both fittings form part of the vehicle as supplied to the customer, and are covered by GM’s five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty.
As an NB2-certified vehicle, specific licensing requirements apply for the Silverado 2500 HD fitted with the 5th wheel hitch. Customers are advised to check with their relevant State Roads Authority for further information.
