Mitsubishi brings back GLX-R grade for Triton
Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited (MMAL) has introduced MY24.5 updates for the Triton range. The GLX-R nameplate returns, featuring a distinctive visual identity and specification upgrades over the GLX it’s based on. Additionally, Tailgate Assist has been introduced with the GLX-R and will be added to two other Triton grades.
“The all-new Triton has delivered on its promise: It is the best Triton we have ever offered,” said MMAL CEO, Shaun Westcott.
“We have also taken on feedback from customers, media and most importantly the dealer network. The result is an enhanced model range and improved specification that we have been able to rapidly bring to market.
“The GLX-R has always represented great value for money and this latest iteration has high visual appeal and true all-round capability.”
Triton GLX-R returns
First offered locally in 2005 on the fourth-generation Triton, the GLX-R remained in the range until 2015, when the fifth generation was introduced. After a break of five years, the GLX-R returned in 2020 and remained in the Australian lineup until the end of 2023.
When the all-new Triton launched locally earlier this year, the GLX-R wasn’t among the available model grades. That’s now changed, with the GLX-R joining the lineup, priced between the GLX+ and GLS.
Available exclusively as a 4x4 dual-cab ute, the new Triton GLX- R runs the same 2.4-litre bi-turbo diesel four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission as the rest of the new Triton range. The GLX-R also uses the same Super Select II 4WD system with Drive Mode Terrain Control System as the higher-grade Triton GLS and GSR.
Reflecting its likely applications and customer base, the GLX-R has ‘standard duty’ suspension, as used on the GLS and GSR. For improved control in the front, this is comprised of a high-mounted upper wishbone layout, paired with 36mm shock absorbers. The rear suspension features three high-tensile steel leaves to deliver a comfortable ride, whether laden or unladen.
Visual cues on the GLX-R include black 18-inch alloys with ‘highway terrain’ tyres, a black sports bar and mouldings on the lower edge of the doors. Side steps are deleted. Inside, there’s a leather steering wheel and full floor carpeting.
Tailgate Assist
As a result of dealer and customer feedback, tailgate assist debuts on the MY24.5 Triton. This dual strut system makes for easier opening and closing of the tailgate. Exclusive to the GLX-R following its launch in October, Tailgate Assist has since been added to the GLS and GSR grades.
