Mazda expands CX-8 range for 2020
The range now stretches from Sport, through Touring and GT, to the top-of-the-range Asaki, with the new front-wheel drive petrol-engined Sport variant meaning the CX-8 also has a starting price under $40,000 for the first time.
The petrol engine is the Skyactiv-G 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated four cylinder applied to other Mazda models and producing 140kW/252Nm. Its introduction to the CX-8 is said to be in response to those who do most of their driving in urban environments. Available exclusively in front-wheel drive and with a six-speed auto in the CX-8, the petrol engine is offered on Sport and Touring grades only.
The Skyactiv-D 2.2 i-Activ twin-turbo diesel still remains available across the range and is the only engine available on the upper grade GT and Asaki grades. A six-speed auto is the sole transmission for the 140kW/450Nm diesel, with all diesel-powered CX-8s offered with all-wheel drive.
All AWD models now feature Mazda’s Off-Road Traction Assist function that minimises wheel spin by distributing torque to the wheels that have the most grip.
Features added or upgraded across the CX-8 range for 2020 include more sound insulation material in the roof (of non-sunroof variants) to reduce NVH levels and a larger 8.0-inch centre console display, while the Smart City Brake Support adds night time pedestrian detection.
On Touring and Asaki grades, there’s now an electric sunroof and a one-touch power folding function for the second-row seats that makes third-row seat entry easier, with the third-row also getting two USB ports in these grades.
