A big part of the local SUV landscape, Subaru’s Forester has found a home in more than 300,000 Australian driveways since its debut in 1997. Turbocharged, diesel engine and hybrid options have been added over the years, but a constant has been the flat four ‘Boxer’ engine and Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive system.
Larger and roomier than the Outback, the five-seat Forester has been a favourite with Aussie families, offering abundant room for kids and good luggage space. These and other qualities have made it the best-selling vehicle in its segment on multiple occasions.

The Forester featured is from the fourth generation of the SUV, launched at the end of 2012 and reaching the Australian market in 2013. Petrol and diesel engine options were available, along with the choice of six-speed manual or seven-speed CVT transmissions. The diesel had been available with the previous generation, but the CVT was new for the Gen 4 Forester, replacing a conventional automatic.
While 2017-plated, this Forester is technically a 2018 model, as the MY18 version was introduced locally in May, 2017. A little over a year later, the fifth generation Forester arrived in Australia, dropping the diesel and introducing a hybrid drivetrain.

The Forester range for 2017/18 started with the ‘L’ grade, stepping up to the ‘S’ like the vehicle featured, with the XT above that and a Ts Special Edition as the range topper. Variants of the L and XT were also available in 2017.
While not the premium grade, the S was still well-equipped, with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and partial leather seat trim as standard, plus a six-speaker stereo, 7.0-inch multi-function centre screen, Subaru’s Starlink infotainment system, satnav, dual zone climate control, voice recognition, a power sunroof, power windows and power front seats (memory function for driver’s seat). The age of this Forester means there’s no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto compatibility, though.
More practical standard features included roof rails, a power tailgate, 12V sockets, power steering with tilt/tele adjustment, LED lighting, multiple cup holders, and bottle holders in all four doors.

While the Forester S could also be had with a 2.5-litre petrol engine, the 2.0-litre turbo-diesel Boxer four fitted to this example produced 108kW at 3600rpm and 350Nm at 2400rpm – almost 100Nm more than even the 2.5 petrol. Listed fuel economy is 6.4lt/100km (combined cycle) from the 60-litre tank. The seven-speed CVT offered a centre console shift and paddle shifters, while the capability of the permanent all-wheel drive could be enhanced with ‘X-Mode’ that optimised engine output, transmission performance, torque distribution and braking to all four wheels. X-Mode also incorporated a Hill Descent Control.
High bumpers made for good approach/departure angles, enhanced by 220mm of ground clearance, while wading depth is around the 360mm mark.

Standard safety equipment included ABS, ESC, EBD, Emergency Brake Assist, Traction Control, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Forward Collision Warning, High- and Low-Speed Crash Avoidance, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Sensor, rear and side cameras, auto/active headlights and seven airbags.
Power folding and heated mirrors, central locking, keyless entry, push-button starting and 18-inch alloys (with a full-size spare wheel) were also standard equipment on the 2017 Forester 2.0D-S.

Boot space starts at a reasonable 422 litres with the rear seats occupied, expanding to 1,474 litres when they’re folded, although those considering loading up a Forester with camping essentials should note the payload capacity is 351kg. Braked towing capacity is 1,800kg.
Other key dimensions are 4,610mm x 1,795mm x 1,735mm (LxWxH), a 2,640mm wheelbase, 1,729kg kerb weight and 10.6m turning circle.

Finished in silver and appearing to be in very good condition overall, listed mileage on this Forester 2.0D-S is 193,403km. Sydney Fine Autos expect it will sell quickly, so for more details, click HERE.
