Here’s an SUV currently available at Bluestone Automotive:
2012 Hyundai ix35 Highlander
- Top-of-the-range model
- 2.4-litre petrol engine
- Six-speed sports automatic
- All-wheel drive
- Premium equipment

A compact five-seat SUV that enjoyed a brief, but successful period in the Australian market, the ix35 was introduced in 2010, replacing the Tucson. Combining modern, sporty styling with reliable, if unexciting, drivetrains, the ix35 went up against Toyota’s RAV4, the Nissan X-Trail and Honda CR-V. The VW Tiguan, Kia Sportage and Mazda CX-5 could be regarded as competitors, too. When the Tucson nameplate was re-introduced in 2015, this time as a midsize SUV, the ix35 was discontinued.
A constant for most of the ix35’s six years on the local market was a choice of Active, Elite and Highlander model grades, with Highlander being the premium offering.

At launch, ix35 drivetrain offerings included 2.0-litre turbo diesel, 2.0-litre petrol and 2.4-litre petrol engines (all four-cylinder), while transmission options started with a six-speed auto and five-speed manual that was later upgraded to six speeds.
The 2.0 petrol engine peaked at 122kW, with the 2.4 petrol offering 130kW, while the 2.0 diesel, unusually, was the most powerful of the lot, with 135kW.
Reflecting changing tastes and budgets, what launched with permanent all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive options later saw 4x4 on demand introduced, with a hydrogen fuel cell ix35 offered, too.
While the ix35 was very much a city SUV, the 50:50 split AWD system was capable enough to handle moderate off-road conditions, even without low range.

When the ‘LM2’ series ix35 was introduced for 2013, replacing the original LM series, differences were minor. Engine and transmission options were the same, but the 2.4 petrol was boosted to 136kW. Other changes included retuned suspension, subtle styling tweaks and new wheels, plus adjustments to standard and optional equipment. A new ‘SE’ grade was introduced at the same time, priced under the Highlander but only available with a diesel if you wanted AWD.

For a 2012 ix35 Highlander like the example shown here, standard features included auto headlights with follow-me-home function, power folding and heated mirrors, a dual power sunroof, 18-inch alloy wheels (with a full-size spare) and disc brakes all round.

Inside, the Highlander spec meant a multi-function infotainment screen, satnav, six-speaker sound system with a multi-stack CD player, MP3, iPod and Aux input. Also standard was electric power steering, cruise control, push-button starting, keyless entry, dual zone climate control and leather trim. A power driver’s seat with manual lumbar adjustment, heated front seats, a rear camera and rear parking sensors were also on the spec list.
Cargo space ranged from 730 litres with all five seats occupied, to 1,579 litres with the second-row seats folded.

The ix35 safety spec included six airbags, ABS, ESC, EBD, traction control, hill descent control and a hill holder function. This was enough to receive the maximum five-star ANCAP rating when new.
The 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine in this ix35 is the 130kW version that offers peak torque of 227Nm. Listed fuel consumption is 9.2lt/100km (combined cycle) from the 55-litre tank, for a claimed range of up to 753km. The six-speed sports auto drives all four wheels via an all-wheel drive system with a centre diff. Being equipped with the 2.4 petrol means this ix35 is perhaps less suited to towing and regular off-road work than the gruntier diesel.

Key weights and measures include exterior dimensions of 4,410mm x 1,820mm x 1,655mm (LxWxH), a 2,640mm wheelbase, 475kg payload and 1,600kg braked towing capacity.
Finished in Sleek Silver, this ix35 had a mileage reading of 204,206km at time of writing. Listed features include a multi-function steering wheel, rear privacy glass, USB ports, 12v outlet, Bluetooth, and that modern necessity - multiple cupholders.
