If you’re going off-road, who says you can’t do it in luxury and comfort? Since its debut, the Land Rover Discovery has always offered a bit more refinement and appointments than the standard Land Rover, without encroaching on the Range Rover’s premium territory.
The Discovery had been introduced in 1989 to counter the growing number of well-equipped 4x4s coming from Japanese manufacturers. As these were being used as daily drivers by suburban families, Land Rover engineered the Discovery to do the same, making it easier to live with as a day-to-day vehicle while retaining land Rover’s signature off-road capabilities.
As with earlier ‘Series’ Land Rovers, the Discovery went through Series I and II phases, but the third generation that launched in 2004 was renamed ‘Discovery 3’. This continued with the fourth-generation ‘Discovery 4’ version that was introduced in 2009.

While broadly similar to the Discovery 3, the Discovery 4 moved the model upmarket and introduced improved engine performance, suspension and braking. The 2.7-litre turbo diesel V6 was enlarged to 3.0 litres, delivering better performance and fuel economy, while reducing emissions. The petrol engine option was a naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8, but this was replaced by a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 for 2014.
The 2014 Discoveries also saw the six-speed automatic transmission updated to an eight-speed unit. And while some markets got a six-speed manual, it was auto-only for Australia.
A facelift for the 2014 model year saw the front bumper, headlights, grille and mirrors redesigned, while ‘LAND ROVER’ identification across the bonnet’s leading edge was replaced with ‘DISCOVERY’ badging.
At the same time, the ‘4’ suffix was dropped, with all subsequent models simply referred to as ‘Discovery’. This was part of Land Rover’s plan to make Discovery a brand in its own right, as they would later do with the Defender.

For the local market, the 2014 Discovery range consisted of the TDV6, SDV6 SE, SDV6 HSE, SCV6 SE and SCV6 HSE. Midway through the year, an ‘XXV’ special edition was released to celebrate the Discovery’s 25th Anniversary.
TDV6 and SDV6 variants were powered by the same 3.0 t/d V6 with the same outputs – 183kW at 4000rpm and 600Nm at 2000rpm. The main difference was the TDV6 was a five-seater and the SDV6 had seating for seven. The TDV6 also had fewer appointments, so was significantly cheaper. SCV6 SE and HSEs ran the new, 250kW/450Nm 3.0 supercharged petrol V6 and offered equivalent spec levels to their diesel siblings.
The XXV was based on the SDV6 HSE and included several factory options as standard.
Listed fuel economy for the diesel SDV6 HSE was 8.8lt/100km (combined cycle), which rose to 12lt/100km with the petrol engine. An 82-litre fuel tank was standard with the diesel, while the petrol Discovery got an 86-litre tank. Range was listed at 932km for the diesel SDV6 HSE and 717km for the petrol SCV6 HSE (average distance in each instance).

A 2014-model Discovery SDV6 HSE like the example featured here benefitted from improvements in reliability that started in 2012. Prior to that, Discoveries did have a reputation for mechanical failures that had nothing to do with how hard they could be flogged off-road.
Speaking of off-road, the 2014 Discovery was loaded with features for tackling tough conditions. Along with the full-time four-wheel drive system with low range, a locking centre diff, adjustable air suspension with auto-levelling, and Hill Descent Control, the Discovery’s Terrain Response system offered five selectable modes – General, Mud-Ruts, Grass-Gravel-Snow, Rock Crawl and Sand. Each mode adjusted throttle response, transmission shifting and the Hill Descent Control calibration to suit the surface conditions.

Obviously, a set of steel wheels and off-road tyres would enable this capability to be better harnessed than the alloys and road-biased tyres that most Discoveries are fitted with. Capability could be further enhanced with options that included an active rear diff, surround view camera, tyre pressure monitoring and a wade sensing monitor.
Wading depth in the MY14 Discovery was 800mm, and while approach, departure and breakover angles are hard to track down, they should be around 37, 30 and 27 degrees, respectively.

The Discovery featured is finished in Fuji White, which was one of 17 colour options available for 2014 and the only one not to attract a price premium. Body-coloured door handles, bumpers, wheelarch flares and mirrors are standard, as is the silver finish for the distinctive grille insert. The 19-inch alloys on this vehicle were standard, too, and available in two designs. A full-sized spare was fitted, with 20-inch alloys optional. Roof rails, as fitted to this vehicle, were also optional, as were adaptive headlights, tinted windows and a sunroof.
The tailgate is horizontally split, making it more versatile for loading and access in tight spaces than the single-piece tailgates fitted to the first two Discovery generations.

Inside, black leather features on all three rows of seating (2-3-2 layout), with memory function, height adjustability and electric lumbar support for the driver. The front passenger gets manual height and lumbar adjustment.
Interior changes introduced on the Disco 4 included a revised instrument layout and rotary control for the transmission that retracted into the centre console when the ignition was switched off. A multi-function centre console screen, satnav, 11-speaker stereo with CD/iPod/MP3/USB inputs, four-zone climate control, voice recognition, paddle shifters, electric parking brake and ambient lighting reflected the MY14 Discovery’s upmarket interior appointments.

Safety and driver assistance features include ABS, ESC, EBD, Traction Control, Rollover Stability Control, Hill Descent Control, Hill Holder, Trailer Sway Control, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera and eight airbags. Even without the optional surround-view camera, blind spot monitoring and reverse traffic detection, this was enough for the MY14 Discovery to receive a four-star ANCAP rating.
Dimensions are 4,829mm x 2,053mm x 1,887mm (LxWxH), with a 2,495kg kerb weight and 745kg payload. Towing capacity is the industry standard 3,500kg braked and 750kg unbraked.
Options were abundant on the MY14 Discovery, from different cosmetic packages, a 17-speaker sound system and heated steering wheel, to adaptive headlights, keyless entry and rear seat entertainment system, to name a few. It’s not clear what options – if any – have been fitted to this example, so contact Thompson Prestige for more details.
This 2014 Discovery SDV6 HSE appears to be in very good condition throughout, with 155,888km on the odometer at time of writing. Test drives are available.
