4x4 FOR SALE
Here’s a 4x4 currently available at Australian Car Sales Group:
2013 Nissan Navara RX dual cab
- 2.5-litre turbo diesel engine
- 5-speed automatic transmission
- Dual range four-wheel drive
- ST-X wheels and custom graphics
- Roof rack, side steps and other extras

With its roots in the Datsun/Nissan 720 that was first offered in Australia in 1980, the first Nissan ute to wear the Navara badge arrived in 1986. This ‘D21 Series’ had made its global debut a year earlier, carrying a number of different names, depending on the market. Available as single cab, extended ‘king cab’ and dual cab, as well as ute and cab chassis, the D21 offered a better interior, with more car-like amenities than the spartan 720 it replaced. From the outset, 4x2 and 4x4 variants were available, along with petrol and diesel engines, while a four-speed auto transmission was introduced as an option for the five-speed manual in 1988. The D21 Navara remained in production until 1997.

The D22 Series Navara brought several improvements over the model it replaced, and proved so popular that it was sold alongside its ‘D40 Series’ replacement for a decade. A series of upgrades in its first six years on the market kept the D22 Navara fresh and relevant, while the introduction of the ST-R grade proved to be a surprise hit. The ST-R’s sporty looks attracted buyers, while the new 3.0 turbo diesel four offered significantly better performance – 110kW/314Nm– than the 76kW/220Nm 3.2 naturally aspirated diesel it replaced. This new engine, along with improved ride and refinement, was also available on other D22 Navara grades.

Nissan’s decision to sell two generations of Navara alongside each other seemed odd, but it allowed them to pitch vehicles to two different market segments. The D22 was the bedrock of the local range, appealing to tradies and fleet buyers who were more interested in price and practicalities than fashion, while the D40, offered in a limited range, was aimed at the lifestyle customer and families.
Initially, the D40 Navara was only available as a dual cab ute, but that’s become the most popular body style for all manufacturers pitching these body-on-chassis vehicles to the Australian market.

Over time, the D40 Navara would outsell the D22 variant, starting in 2008 when single cab and extended cab bodies were introduced. The engine options – a 2.5-litre turbo diesel four and 4,0-litre petrol V6 – kept the D40 ahead of its predecessor, as did a longer list of standard equipment.
Reflecting the adoption of these vehicles by the Australian market, the Navara would account for one in every three Nissan sales locally by the time D40 production ended. D22 availability came to a halt at the same time, with both generations replaced by the all-new ‘NP300’ Navara (aka D23 Series) from 2015.

Being from the final few years of D40 Series production means the 2013 Navara dual cab featured benefits from all the upgrades and improvements applied over the preceding decade. It’s only the RX grade (priced and spec’d below the ST-X) that prevents this Navara from being a prime example of its generation.
Being a dual cab, this Navara RX gets the more powerful 2.5-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder engine, which peaked at 126kW and 403Nm, compared to 106kW and 356Nm in single and king cab versions. This vehicle also has a five-speed automatic transmission, which was optional to Nissan’s six-speed manual. Drive selection is via the dash-mounted dial, making the switch from 2WD to 4WD Hi and 4WD Lo easy.

Upgrades over standard spec on this vehicle start with 17-inch alloys in the style of the Navara ST-X, but whether the spare is also a 17-inch alloy wheel or the standard 16-inch steel wheel is unknown. Other additions include side steps, wind deflectors, a bonnet protector, roof rack with light bar, tinted windows and a set of graphics that appear to be inspired by the first Navara PRO-4X from 2021.

Inside, the factory stereo/CD player has been replaced with a Bluetooth-compatible JVC audio unit that offers audio streaming, hands-free calling and voice recognition. Any additional functiosn for this are unknown. Similarly, it’s unknown if the factory four-speaker set-up has been enhanced or replaced.

According to factory figures, the 2.5 turbo diesel four in this vehicle offers fuel economy of 10.5lt/100km (combined cycle), and the fuel capacity is 80 litres.
Standard external features for a Navara RX like this include body colour bumpers and mirror caps, a chromed grille surround and auto levelling headlights. There are provisions for fog lights, but these were only standard on higher grades.

Inside, the RX spec meant cloth seat trim and vinyl floors. That’s not as ‘poverty spec’ as it sounds, with the ST-X running cloth seats, too, although it did upgrade to carpeted floors. Other standard interior features for the RX grade include analogue gauges with LCD inserts and tactile controls for the heating and air con. Power window operation is limited to the front doors only, but two gloveboxes are part of an abundance of storage options that include bottle holders in the front doors, front seatback storage pockets and cupholders in both rows. There’s a 12V outlet, too.

An ANCAP rating of 4 out of 5 stars for the Navara in 2012 is reflective of the lack of active safety tech in the model back then, along with there being only driver and front passenger airbags (side airbags did some with the ST and ST-X). Beyond this, there is ABS, EBD, ESC and Traction Control only.
Key weights and measures include 5,125mm x 1,850mm x 1,780mm (LxWxH), 3,200mm wheelbase, 2,860kg GVM and 855kg payload capacity. Towing capacity (braked) is 3,000kg, but it should be noted that the add-ons to this vehicle may impact those factory numbers.

Currently available from Australian Car Sales Group, this vehicle is affordably priced and presents well, with the combination of cosmetic and practical changes making it look younger than its 2013 model year. Listed mileage is 295,864km at time of writing.
