Holden Design expertise in Indian SUV
The first product to be conceived, designed and developed by GM India, the Chevrolet-badged Adra was created specifically for the Indian market, but GM says the concept has applications as a global platform.
Holden Design supported the development of the Chevrolet concept and were responsible for the construction and fabrication of the show car.
Michael Simcoe, former head of Holden Design and currently Executive Director GMIO Design, said the Adra illustrated GM's approach to global design programs.
"Today, GM designers work on global programs, the majority of which are for international markets and Adra is a perfect example of this," Mr Simcoe said.
"Holden's design capabilities are recognised worldwide. They have a reputation for being a mature and highly experienced design centre with incredible scope including creative design, clay modelling, animation, colour and trim and fabrication.
"Traditionally, work that took place in Australia would be seen on Australian roads. That's no longer how we operate," Mr Simcoe said.
"Today, GM designers work on global programs, the majority of which are for international markets and Adra is a perfect example of this.
"The concept clearly showcases GM India's impressive creative design talent and strong understanding of this emerging market.
"And Holden's design capabilities are recognised worldwide. They have a reputation for being a mature and highly experienced design centre with incredible scope including creative design, clay modelling, animation, colour and trim and fabrication.
"The end result is a show car that is sure to impress the Indian public and one that GM India should be incredibly proud," the former Holden Design Director added.
One of only two design centres in the GM world with this capability, the Melbourne-based Holden Design team will survive the shutdown of Holden's local manufacturing operations by the end of 2017.
On display at New Delhi's Auto Show this February 5 - 11, the Chevrolet Adra features modern design features, along with more practical touches for the Indian market, namely all-round visibility, generous interior space and high ground clearance.
