Here’s a recent arrival at Ringwood GWM:
2025 GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV
- 2.0lt turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and 120kW electric motor
- 300kW and 750Nm combined output
- Up to 115km pure electric driving range
- Four-wheel drive with low range and selectable driving/steering modes

A read through the spec sheet of the Cannon Alpha Plug-In Hybrid EV (PHEV) presents this dual cab ute as an overachiever, with ‘Best in Class’ numbers in multiple areas, including total driving range, EV only driving range, battery capacity, power and towing capacity.
The Cannon Alpha PHEV made its Australian debut earlier this year, and while it wasn’t the first of its kind here (the BYD Shark 6 was the pioneer), it’s arguably better than its rival in several areas. Additionally, the Alpha PHEV is based on the Alpha and related Alpha Hybrid, so it’s a model that’s already proven – and popular – in the Australian market. It’s also worth clarifying that the Cannon Alpha is the larger version of the vehicle that launched here back in 2021 as the ‘GWM Ute’ and was renamed ‘Cannon’ in 2024. At 5.44m long and 1.99mt wide, the Alpha is marginally larger than the volume selling dual cabs here in Australia – HiLux, Ranger, D-Max, etc., - but still smaller than full-size American pickups.

Perhaps the most surprising thing about the Cannon Alpha PHEV is the price. Ahead of its local release in April, some were predicting a price tag north of $70,000. And while the official list pricing is $66,990 (+ ORCs) in ‘Ultra’ spec as shown here, this brand-new example is just $61,085 drive away from Ringwood GWM. Being the Ultra spec, it’s better equipped than the entry-level Lux spec, with some minor cosmetic differences, too.
The additions include a locking front diff, panoramic sunroof, memory function for the power folding mirrors, upgraded (10 speaker) stereo system, leather accented interior trim, massaging front seats, multi-function rear seats, head-up display, wireless charging pad at the rear, a heated steering wheel, ambient interior lighting and a clever tailgate that can fold down in the conventional manner, but also open barndoor-style, with a 60/40 split.

Compared to the Alpha Hybrid, the key improvement with the Alpha PHEV is in terms of power and range. While the Hybrid delivered a combined 255kW and 648Nm, the PHEV ups that to 300kW and 750Nm, thanks to a much larger (37.1kWh versus 1.76kWh) battery. Comparisons are a moot point though, as GWM recently axed the Hybrid from the Australian market to focus on the PHEV. It’s worth noting that a non-hybrid, diesel-engined version of the Cannon Alpha is also available for around $10K less than the PHEV.
The ‘Hi4T’ drivetrain in the Alpha PHEV is split between GWM’s familiar 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder engine that puts out 180kW and 380Nm, and an electric motor – mounted between the engine and nine-speed automatic transmission – that provides 120kW and 400Nm.
EV-only driving range increases to a claimed 115km, with combined range of 1,060km, despite the fuel tank being reduced to 75 litres to accommodate the two-piece battery pack. Listed fuel economy is 1.7lt/100km with the electric motor at optimum use, rising to around 7.9lt/100km when relying on the turbo petrol engine.
AC charging at 7kW and DC charging at 50kW are available, with the latter recharging the battery in under 40 minutes.

The electric motor arrangement in the Cannon Alpha PHEV allows a conventional mechanical four-wheel drive system to be used, which can be adjusted across Standard, Sport and Eco modes, as well as high and low range. To complement this, there are three selectable steering modes – Light, Comfort and Sport. Further suiting off-road use, there’s Hill Ascent and Descent Control, while the Ultra spec level means Auto Reversing Assist and a locking front diff (to complement the standard locking rear diff) are also included. Suspension is independent up front, with a multi-link rear.
Wading depth is 800mm and ground clearance 210mm, with approach/departure/breakover angles of 28.5/23.0/19.0 degrees, although some road tests have noted the low-mounted tow bar negatively impacts departure angle.
With the larger battery taking up undertray space, the full-size 18-inch spare wheel has been relocated to within the ute tub. Understanding that this may not be the optimal solution for either trade or recreational users, a tyre inflation kit is supplied as standard. It’s also worth noting that the EV battery increases GVM and reduces payload, but towing capacity is the industry standard 3500kg (braked).

Stepping inside the Cannon Alpha PHEV, there’s a premium look and feel, with leather-accented seats that aren’t available in the Lux spec, plus a leather-trimmed steering wheel, analogue clock, power windows (including the rear windscreen), satin metallic accents, gloss black sections, and woodgrain-look detailing on the dash and doors. While the faux woodgrain is perhaps a little too artificial, the rest of the cabin looks classy and ‘European’.
A 14.6-inch centre touchscreen (larger than the Lux spec 12.3-inch screen) sits above analogue switches for the dual zone climate control system. There are also tactile buttons for the high-low range, diff locks, electronic parking brake and EV modes, with a rotary dial selector for the drive modes – another European-style touch.
The steering wheel carries the usual phone and screen scrolling functions, while the fully digital 12.3-inch instrument screen eschews traditional representations of speed, revs, temp, etc., to prioritise navigation information. As such, the speed, fuel level, battery capacity, odometer displays and various mode readings are small and positioned at the outer edges of the screen.

Safety equipment is comprehensive and includes ABS, EBD, AEB, ESC, Rollover Stability Control, and collision mitigation with pedestrian detection, vulnerable road user and braking functions. There’s also front and rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, forward collision warning, driver fatigue warning, trailer sway control, blind spot sensor, traffic sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors, front, rear and side cameras, automated parking assistance, rear seat occupant alert, side door exit warning, traction control, launch control and seven airbags, including head (front and rear) and side (front seat occupants).
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as is Bluetooth and voice command functionality. Lighting is LED all round, with auto high beam and fog lights that turn with the steering.
All this results in the Cannon Alpha PHEV being given a 5-star ANCAP safety rating – the same as the Hybrid and diesel versions.

The tray in the Cannon Alpha PHEV measures 1500mm x 1520mm (L x W), with 1100mm between the wheelarches, so a Euro-size 1200mm pallet won’t fit. Other key dimensions are the 5445mm length and 1991mm width already mentioned, plus 1924mm height, a 1635mm track, 13m turning circle, 2810kg kerb weight and 3480kg GVM. Compared to the Cannon Alpha diesel, which can offer a payload of up to 821kg, the Alpha PHEV is only 685kg, which limits how far you can go with fitout for camping applications, tradie toolboxes, etc. Braked towing capacity is 3500kg.

Finished in Crystal Black, with only delivery mileage, this vehicle can be personalised with a range of available genuine GWM accessories, including bull and nudge bars, a tow bar kit, cargo covers, headlight protectors and more.
As a new vehicle, this 2025 Cannon Alpha PHEV is backed by GWM’s 7-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, with 7-year roadside assist and 7-year capped price servicing. For more details, click HERE.
