Along with Toyota’s HiLux and LandCruiser 70 Series, the Mitsubishi Triton, Mazda BT-50, Isuzu D-Max and Ford Ranger, Nissan’s Navara has been a staple of the Australian new car market for more than 20 years. While the Navara’s usually been outsold by those rivals in the Australian market, one of its better years came after the release of the third-generation ‘D40’ version in 2005, with sales increasing by 27 per cent in 2007 to capture almost a quarter of Australia’s 4x4 ute market. In the same year, the Navara took out its second consecutive ‘Ute of the Year’ award, presented by 4x4 Australia magazine.
The appeal of the D40 Navara over the D22 it replaced (but was sold alongside for several years) was its improved cabin space and refinement, reflecting a development programme that took much from the Pathfinder SUV. As a result, the Navara was more livable as a family vehicle than ever before.

Offered in two- and four-wheel drive, with petrol or diesel engine options, manual or auto transmissions, single and dual cab body styles, plus a range of model grades, the D40 Navara aimed to fill as many needs as possible. For 2007, the Navara range included DX (D22), RX and ST-X grades, with the latter at the top, offering trim and features that were either optional or unavailable on the lower grades. The ST-X was the most expensive Navara you could buy in 2007, starting at just under $46,000. A year later, the ST-X would serve as a base for the Navara ‘Outlaw’ limited edition that added a number of cosmetic extras outside and an improved stereo inside.

The 2007 Navara ST-X dual cab could be had with a 2.5-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder, or 4.0-litre petrol V6, with six-speed manual and five-speed automatic transmissions available for both. The 2.5 turbo diesel four produced a class-leading 126kW at 4000rpm and 403Nm at 2000rpm, which made it far superior for towing and carrying than the petrol engine. It was more fuel efficient, too. Listed economy from the t/d was 9.2lt/100km (combined cycle), although real-world reports suggest around 10lt is more realistic. The fuel tank could hold 80 litres and was approved for E10 diesel.
By comparison, a 2007 Navara ST-X with the 4.0 petrol V6 produced 198kW and 385Nm, with combined cycle fuel economy of 13.6lt/100km.

Four-wheel drive was standard on the ST-X, with a two-speed transfer case and auto-locking front hubs. Aiding off-road capability was good ground clearance and steep approach/departure angles for a ute.
Like most of its contemporaries, the 2007-model Navara was built on a sturdy ladder frame, with independent front suspension and a leaf spring/live axle rear, disc front brakes and drum rear brakes.
Standard features on the ST-X included power windows, power folding mirrors, body-coloured bumpers and wheelarch flares, 16-inch alloy wheels (with a full-size steel spare), six-disc CD stacker in a six-speaker sound system, cruise control, full floor carpeting and multiple storage options in the cabin.

In 2007, “premium” utes were some years from being a factor in the Australian market, so the Navara ST-X still had cloth seats and manual adjustment of the driver’s seat. Leather trim was limited to the steering wheel and gear shifter, while the steering wheel itself only had cruise control buttons (no audio controls). Other “missing” elements that we take for granted these days included no telescoping adjustment for the steering wheel, with airbags for the driver and front passenger only.

Safety features beyond this included ABS, EBD and Brake Assist; the latter being standard on the Navara ST-X and optional on the lower grades. Seatbelt pre-tensioners and an integral rollbar were the only other notable safety features, which may explain the Navara’s in-period ANCAP rating of 3 stars out of 5.
Specs on the 2007 Navara ST-X included a 1,985kg kerb weight, GVM of 2,805kg and 820kg payload, while the towing capacity was the industry standard of 3,000kg (braked). Occupying a 5,220mm x 1,850mm x 1,774mm (LxWxH) space, the Navara ST-X had a 3,200mm wheelbase, and front and rear track of 1,570mm.

On the 2007 Navara ST-X featured, it’s running the 2.5 turbo diesel and six-speed manual transmission. Clutches were a known weak point in the Navara D40 manual, so prospective buyers should check if the clutch has been replaced, along with general service history, if available.
Notable extras on this vehicle include an LED light bar and nudge bar up front, roof rack with side awning, spotlights at the rear, a towbar and aluminium dropside tray from Tiger Trays. Additional storage is slung under this tray on the nearside, with a large, lockable toolbox from EzToolBox sitting in the tray on the offside.

This ute wears its factory alloy wheels and what appear to be near-new Falken Wildtrak A/T tyres. Overall condition of the body shows its age, but no obvious signs of off-road use, which along with the tray’s toolbox, suggest this vehicle was more of a tradie’s ute than a bush basher.
Listed mileage is 273,185km, which averages at just over 15,000km annually from new.

Finished in Silver Lightning metallic paint, this Navara appears to be in good condition externally, but seeing it in person, or calling AAA Motors to discuss further is recommended. For any vehicle of this age and mileage, investigating available warranty options is also recommended.
