Colorado ‘Xtreme’
Hot on the heels of Toyota’s trio of special-edition versions of the HiLux , Holden has announced an equally tricked-up version of the Colorado, dubbed the ‘Xtreme’.Based on the Z71 grade Colorado 4x4 dual cab, the Xtreme was inspired by the concept of the same name, designed and built at Holden’s Port Melbourne headquarters, that debuted at the Bangkok Motor Show two years ago.
The Xtreme is said to improve the Colorado Z71’s off-road abilities thanks to the addition of Goodyear Wrangler All Terrain tyres as standard and a number of specialty parts designed and developed in Australia by Holden and now part of the Holden Genuine Accessories range.
“The Colorado Xtreme was a concept car that resonated with our customers, and to not only put it into production, but elevate it, is very exciting,” said Holden’s Product Marketing Manager, Andre Scott. “As a base vehicle, Colorado Z71 is already very capable, so we’ve expanded our Genuine Accessories range for additional off-road capability.
Cue the Holden Winch system, the Xtreme’s hero accessory, which is a game-changer. “Backed up with a long list of accessories, customers can have confidence that their ute will not only look rugged but will be able to perform in the harshest of environments.”
Winch…
The winch is a key part of the Z71 Xtreme specification and while it’s essentially a Warn unit, there’s enough home-grown features around it for the whole arrangement to be labelled the ‘Holden Winch System’. Described by Holden as a best-in-class unit, the winch has a 10,000 lb load capacity and 30m synthetic line.
The Holden input – and a clever part of the design – consists of mounting the which in the lower part of the front bumper, instead of above, with access via a flip-up front numberplate. Surrounding the winch is a heavy-duty bash plate, with the bumper itself specially designed to suit the system and featuring integral foglamps and parking sensors.
Mounted between the bumper’s lower section and upper nudge bar is an LED light bar, with the front suspension updated to suit the new bumper. A vehicle recovery kit is also included.
…and More
Other practical additions include a towing package with mount, tongue and towball, plus a steel step rear bumper, tubular steel side steps, wheelarch flares and a roof tray kit.
Cosmetic changes consist of a bonnet bulge, blackout grille, an extended black sports bar, soft tonneau cover, Colorado tailgate branding and identifying Xtreme decals. All up, Holden says the Xtreme carries more than $19,000 worth of Holden Genuine Accessories.
Standard Power
Aside from the front suspension upgrade, there are no changes to the Colorado Z71’s mechanical specification, meaning the drivetrain is the 2.8-litre Duramax turbo diesel four-cylinder engine, matched to a choice of 6-speed manual or 6-speed auto transmission and producing 147kW and 500Nm of torque (with the auto).
The standard Colorado towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes is unchanged, and while not confirmed at press time, the Xtreme presumably carries the same safety features and 5-star ANCAP rating as the Colorado Z71 it’s based on.
Limited Numbers
Priced at $69,990 driveaway, the Xtreme is the most expensive Colorado currently available and close to $10,000 dearer than the Z71-spec it’s based on, but Holden says it’s still good value, given it carries more than $19K of accessories.
